Republic Airline grants sick boy's wish to meet Chicago baseball hero
Ryan Keating of Indianapolis was just 2 years old when his parents got the devastating news: Their son was diagnosed with leukemia. And so began a years-long battle with the deadly disease, a medical journey filled with treatments, tears, prayers, stress and finally – remission. To celebrate, Republic recently flew Ryan, now 13, and his family roundtrip from Indianapolis to Chicago to meet his all-time sports hero: Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The star player also battled cancer, and Ryan counts himself among his biggest fans. It’s all part of what Republic is doing to expand our charitable footprint.

Republic Windows, a Chicago company since 1965, closed it's doors on Friday, December 5, leaving 300 workers without a job, and only a 3 day notice. Under the WARN Act this is illegal, and the company must give at least 60 days notice. Workers have occupied the plant and are demanding that if the plant stays closed, they receive the wages, severance, vacation pay due them--totally $1 million.
Here are some things you can do to help:
1. Donate to the strike fund the families of the workers have to eat, pay rent and utilities, while they are occupying the plant. Donations should be sent to UE Local 1110 at 37 S. Ashland Chicago, IL 60607.
2. Bring friends to the plant to show solidarity, workers can get very de-moralized if they feel like people are just going on with their lives ...

I was driving along and I heard a light explosion right around the corner from where I was in Chicago on 11-7-2019, I looked up in the sky and saw a huge plume of black smoke, I thought it was the coffee roaster nearby but the smoke just got worse within seconds.
I drove down the block to the location of the fire which turned out to be Republic waste Management Facility on Wood and Carroll Street, I first took a looked around made sure nobody needed any help, who wants to be near a pile of garbage anyway, and then took a video of the entire fire.
It seems like the fire was started either from a lithium battery or from spontaneous combustion in the garbage, or who knows what else, i'm sure there is methane gas coming off of the garbage which could be ignited I'm sure.

We invite you to sign our solidarity posters and visit with workers.
3. Call Bank of America CEO Kenneth Lewis. Say that you are a concerned member of the community who is disturbed by BoA's apparent disregard for people's livelihoods by forcing republic windows to shut down without paying people their vacation and WARN act pay. BoA just got $25 Billion from taxpayers precisely to make credit lines like the Republic Windows line work. Calls help, but so do emails and faxes to the CEO. Jobs with Justice National web site has an action email you can send to BofA.

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) are pleased to announce the reopening of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Memorial Hall and Rotunda at the Chicago Cultural Center following a year-long restoration — also celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Chicago Cultural Center, which opened in 1897.
Learn more at ChicagoCulturalCente.org.
In addition to in-person, opening-weekend programming on March 26 & 27 2022, a new TV documentary (“Restoration”) airing in May chronicles the work of Harboe Architects and a team of fine artists and preservation experts as they restore the historic Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall and Rotunda in the Chicago Cultural Center to their original 1897 grandeur and beauty. “Restoration” will air in May on Comcast, RCN, and WOW on Cable25.
The Chicago Cultural Center restoration, which began in February 2021 following an intensive yearlong study, was executed by Harboe Architects and a team of highly specialized preservation experts and artisans, in partnership with the Department of Assets, Information and Services (AIS) and in consultation with conservators and Tim Samuelson, Cultural Historian Emeritus for the City of Chicago. The Landmarks Commission reviewed and unanimously approved the project. The meticulous restoration of the art glass dome and decorative finishes in the G.A.R. rooms, a Civil War memorial, was made possible by a generous grant of services valued at $15,425,000 to the City of Chicago. (The Chicago Cultural Center is home to two magnificent stained-glass domes; the restoration of the Tiffany dome in Preston Bradley Hall was completed in 2008.)

Either way, the Chicago Fire department got that fire completely under control in like 10 minutes flat.
